From noon May 20 to noon May 21, South Orange Village Center hosted non-stop free music at various venues in South Orange Village Center. The music marathon featured blues, rock, R&B, jazz, pop, classical, kids’ rock and more in venues both indoors and outdoors, from parks to restaurants to street corners. The music spree launched the South Orange Village Center Alliance’s ambitious new campaign, Live Music Capital of North Jersey.

Bob Zuckerman, SOVCA’s executive director explained the rationale behind the campaign: “With 6o+ live concerts per summer during our Downtown After Sundown concert series, live performances in our restaurants and bars, the 150+ shows that SOPAC stages during the year, school concerts, the South Orange Symphony plus all our special events such as  Summer Nights on Flood’s Hill, PlayDay and the Seton Village Food Truck Festival, it’s easy to make that claim for a Village our size, and we’re standing by it!” said Zuckerman.

“I think this is a really cool idea and the musicians I work with and know are psyched about it,” said Mark Murphy, owner of Mark Murphy’s Music and a SOVCA board member. “I moved my business and my life to South Orange because of the creative vibe and amount of music you can hear all year long.” Murphy, along with Downtown After Sundown Manager Gregory Burrus, booked performers and bands to fill slots throughout the event. “The overnight hours are tough,” said Murphy, “but we’ve got some talent just crazy enough to do it!”
